Little Wax Cay

Home to a transplanted colony of the endangered Bahamian Hutia, the only native land mammal in the Bahamas.

  • Pets are not permitted anywhere on the cay.
  • Shore visits are prohibited without appropriate research permits.
  • Dying vegetation is a result of the Hutia population. The BNT is presently researching a solution to balance the needs of the hutia while also protecting the biodiversity of the cay.

The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park was the world’s first protected area of its kind, when created in 1959 by the same legislation that established the Bahamas National Trust.
